Action for Self Reliance and Alternatives (ASRA) was established on 12th August 1992 by a group of like-minded professionals including social activists, researchers, doctors, academicians, planners, lawyers, and rehabilitation experts. The organization was founded with a shared vision to serve and empower persons with disabilities, particularly those living in the slums and resettlement colonies of Delhi. Registered as a non-profit voluntary trust, ASRA is led by its Founder, President, and Managing Trustee, Ms. Vandana Mishra.
Over the years, ASRA has grown from working with a single slum community to reaching thousands of beneficiaries across multiple communities. With a dedicated team and strong partnerships, including support from international organizations, ASRA continues to expand its impact and outreach.
ASRA has established its Rehabilitation and Training Centre in Uttam Nagar, New Delhi, serving as a model centre for empowering persons with disabilities. The organization focuses on promoting economic independence and rehabilitation through enhancing physical ‘and functional abilities, skill development, and community-based interventions.
Through its various programs, ASRA works towards early identification, intervention, inclusive education, employment, and community participation. The organization actively collaborates with persons with disabilities, their families, and communities to create sustainable support systems and ensure holistic development.
ASRA is committed to empowering individuals to become self-reliant and confident advocates for their rights while striving to build an inclusive and barrier-free society. With a vision to provide equal opportunities and dignity to every individual, ASRA continues to transform lives and create lasting social impact.
